Question

i5 750 2.67Ghz Stuck at 1.2 / 1.3 Ghz When gaming

Apr 26, 2015 10:45AM PDT

Hey guys I will try to be as quick and simple as possible.

I have the i5 750 for 4 years now. It has been working without any problems.
Im am using the stock fan that comes with it.

6 Days ago decided to upgrade to an hyper evo 212, going to assemble it tomorrow.

I decided to buy the hyper evo 212 for this reason:
GTA 5 came out.
I can play the game without any problems, 60 fps stable and everything.
but Can't Play more than 1 hour before cpu gets to 99C/100C and shuts down.

Dumb me kept on playing making cpu crash 5 times in 2 days before thinking that maybe this wasn't good.

The PROBLEM:
Yesterday I notice that I couldn't play any game at all ( csgo , gta5) because of the lag.

I opened cpu-z and noticed that when in game the core speed is limited between 1.2 Ghz / 1.3 Ghz
This only happens when "In game", if i'm in the menu of the game or on desktop its stable at 2.6Ghz as it should be.

More Info:
Just Before the Lag started I open my pc, dismounted the cpu fan, cleaned it ( it was clean, just some minor dust ) and mounted it again.
i don't know if it as any direct effect or it was just a coincidence.

HELP

Specs if needed:

p7p55lx
8gb ram
1TB and 160GB drives
i5 750 2.67 Ghz
Radeon R9 280
Nox Urano II 630W

Clarification Request
Specs look good

You should be able to play the game with the hardware but , what Operating System do you have?

Bob's right, if it's 4 years old, it's time for a good refresh of the thermal paste .

If you look at the supplied link, it shows minimum requirements for playing the game and the recommended processor speeds. Could your processor be below minimum requirements?
https://www.google.com/search?q=GTA+5&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#newwindow=1&q=gta+5+requirements+for+pc

Probably a dumb question but, there it is... Mischief

The processoe gpes over the needed requirements

I can play the ( or could ) without any problems, it was just the cpu that overheated and to prevent damage shut himself down..
Im on windows 7 64
My cpu goes over the needed requirements without any problems, as long as it can go up to 2.6 Ghz which is suppose to, and not 1.2 ghz..

99C/100C

Extended high temps can age or break CPUs. While you should fix this I worry the CPU is gone.

There are numerous articles about heatsink compound and cooling but 99C/100C is your clue bad things were going to happen.

Cpu is probably damaged

Im starting to think that making it crash 5 time in 2 days wasnt the best idead, too bad i only realize that now..
Thanks anyway man

Answer
Did you clean the CPU and HS surface and reapply thermal

paste ??

And if you're doing that...might look at a better, more efficient HS Fan. Your CPU won't last long if you keep running it like that.

Only cleaned cpu fan

Did not remove or re applied any thermal paste.
I just removed the fan, cleaned it, and mounted it again.
I alread got a hyper evo 212, going to assemble it today, and then I will see if the cpu can provide the initial Ghz it should or if it is permanently damaged.

The Hyper Evo 212 should dramatically reduce the CPU heat.

Here's hoping the slowdown was the system's response to prevent permanent CPU damage.

Keep us posted.

Problem "solved"
Apr 28, 2015 4:57AM PDT

It was exactly that, the cpu was preventing himself from being damaged because of the high temps.
So I mounted the new cooler, now is running at 25 C idle and 40 C idle, with a speed even higher than 2.6 (2.8Ghz)

So I guess everything ended up well.
Thanks for everything man, by the way, is it safe to overclock teh cpu to 3.6Ghz now? Since it was having troubles before because of the temps. Will the 3.6ghz with the new cooler of course, damage the cpu? or I is it safe to do it?

I have that same CPU

Mine is 5 1/2 years and works fine. I don't game but my ASUS board is capable of overclocking and I'd never even consider it. If you're already recovering from what might have become a melt down, I'd consider it even less than never.

First I'm not a big believer in overclocking ...I'm into

stability, reliability, tight RAM timings and decent speed, etc.,

That said....you could try it and monitor the temp real time as you go. If the temp doesn't rise much ...then you could bump it up little by little. Keep in mind the higher you push it...it will eventually overheat and slow down like it did before or just crash

The question is ...do you really see a significant bump in gaming when you're overclocking the CPU ?
