Question

i5 4690k high temps?

Mar 26, 2017 7:17AM PDT

hey, thx for reading.

i think im having some issues with my rig, after i reinstalled windows 10 yesterday the temparatures seems to have gone up from around 45 to 58-60 just from surfing chrome. when playing overwatch im almost up to 70. its never been this high when playing overwatch. used to sit in mid 50 low 60.

i reapplied thermal paste twise in 1 day, i think i used too much the first time, so i took some of it off and smeared it out over the surface of my i5 instead of just leaving a blob and letting it spread out on its own, it had little effect, im seeing 60-62 degrees when writing this, the only other program im running besides chrome is msi command center.

im pretty sure drivers and bios are up to date and i turned off onedrive.

playing overwatch today i got some fps drops to the point where i could actually feel it, that has never happened before.

my specs:

cpu - i5 4690k (im running stock cooler, dont hate me, im poor)

case - fractal design define r5

motherboard - msi z97 gaming 5

gpu - msi geforce gtx 960 2g

ssd - crucial bx200 2.5

ram - hyperx fury ddr3 16G

psu - corsair cx750m

asus dvd writer dwr-24f1mt

old 750g hdd from my hp laptop

windows 10 home edition

avg antivirus full version

malwarebytes full version

i installed destroy windows spying as soon as i had my com it up and running again, from what i could tell it seemed legit.

and i turned off every app off i could find but im still getting higher temp then before my reinstall

Answer
I'd Uninstall "Destroy Windows Spying"..

It tends to break things. See the link below.

https://www.howtogeek.com/273513/why-you-shouldnt-use-anti-spying-tools-for-windows-10/

As to thermal paste, there should be a very thin covering of the paste over the entire surface, not a blob. Just enough so the heatsink and processor make contact to the paste over their full surface. There are plenty of videos on the net showing how it's done.

In all your discussions about heat, you don't mention using compressed air to clean out the inside of the computer. That's certainly required to blow out all the dust from around the processor, heatsink, power supply, and all vents and fans. If you've already done that, then make sure all your fans are actually running by removing the case cover and checking.. If that's fine, then I recommend testing the system with the case cover off and a house fan pointed at the insides. Run it that way and see if the temps come down.

Hope this helps.

destroy windows spying
Mar 26, 2017 9:23AM PDT

was the culprit im pretty sure, im reinstalling everything again just to be sure and the temps have gone down to 41 as im installling drivers, i was doing some spring cleaning inside my com which was why i decided to reinstall everthing again yesterday. i dont have ecces income to spend on compressed air - que the worlds tiniest violin, so i have to use pencels/brushes to dust my com, it looked like a mobbet had died in my psu so i took it all apart and cleaned it as much as possible.

but im back up n' running, sorry if i wasted you time :')

Good To Hear.. As To Compressed Air...
Mar 26, 2017 10:31AM PDT

... Although I happen to have a compressed air tank at work and at the house, in a pinch, I have used compressed air tanks of neighbors and friends. Turn down the pressure a little, make sure they're not spraying water from the hose, hold the nozzle a couple of feet from the open computer case, and blow things out. It just takes a minute or two.

Hope this helps.

still getting high temps
Mar 26, 2017 11:09AM PDT

i dont know whats wrong but ever sinse my reinstall im still getting high temparatures bouncing between 63-65 degress when writing this. on a clean install and no programs running, even with a stock cooler thats high, right? i've tried to maximize airflow and there little to no dust left after i cleaned it. programs and games seems to run fine but im just nervous somethings gotta break if i dont adress this.

could you point me to a video of someone installing a heatsink and applying thermal paste, im not sure but i think thats the problem.

i Breifly started my com yesterday without the heatsink to find out how to install it properly. but even if that is the problem wouldnt my cpu have been completely fried and be useless instead of this decline in, eh, heat management?

First be sure to clean off the old pasted, THEN apply the new.

You might like to see the tests in the link below which shows tests on a variety of application methods.

Here, I've basically done it a couple of different ways. A small drop in the middle, then install the heatsink. And the apply, then spread method. Just my preference by I tend to do the spread method.. It's your choice, just don't use too much as it can make a mess.

Compressed air
Mar 26, 2017 11:10AM PDT

You can buy cans of compressed air at your local merchant.

About 5 bucks.

Also if you have a vac that you can convert to a blower that will work, just keep the nozzle a few feet away from the innards.
