I was told I could get good advice here

by MC6569 / April 10, 2007 9:07 AM PDT

I currently have a desktop that I paid $100 for, to learn on. Now that I have learned a little, I would like to get a refurbished laptop to use when I travel. Both Acer and Toshiba were recommended, but what do I get and where do I find one that uses Windows XP. I need advice from experts.

Tough Question...
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / April 10, 2007 10:12 AM PDT

New laptops are almost always using Vista now.. If you want one with XP, try checking at one of the online sites like "Newegg".

http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=32&name=Notebooks-Laptops

Maybe Tigerdirect.com..(Just my personal opinion but I like Newegg better though.)

If you go to some of your large local computer retailers RIGHT NOW, you might find a few that have XP installed. (I saw one at Staples a couple of days ago.) Your choice will be limited though..

There might also be some local computer shops which may have some refurbished ones as well.. But don't wait. They may not be there for long.

Hope this helps.

Check and recheck

Refurbed laptops from makers like Dell, HP, Compaq and others are always available up to a point, whatever is in stock. Just visit thier website and surf to "bargains, returns, reconditioned" or whatever label they put on it and check them out. Pricing is better than new but again, warranty will be less in most cases very little. Options should be be exactly what you want, but again it maybe only it "orginally" had or was sold under model#-XYZ. Now, many a new laptop is being offered at great starting prices, so check that as well too as they maybe at similar pricing, only options and/or bundled s/w(if applicable) may differ. I have found while old refurbed laptops work quite well if brought "grey market" or repair sources maybe costly comapred to maker sources when offered, plus usually they're older and while fixed are showing some wear&tear and usually no s/w is supplied so consider all that. While you may find a good bargain, don't expect to find real cheap deals, if found, I always suspect them of being otherwise in the longrun. If you want to run XP on a laptop, then find out the specs of such then what XP demands to run in basic mode and then some to find a good match of a laptop. Usually a laptop made in the last 2 yrs. or less is a good XP candidate.
