Question

I want to buy a laptop

Sep 11, 2017 5:06PM PDT

Hello I'm sure you guys get this question very often lol , I'm some what computer savvy but I'm not an expert either. I want a gaming laptop, with a nice screen because I occasionally do some video editing and that sort. I also watch a lot of movies. I know I won't find the perfect laptop and I will have to make some compromise but I would like some help to try and find a laptop that fits most of my needs with a budget of 1,000.

Significant difference?
Sep 11, 2017 6:13PM PDT

This actually looks nice, is there a significant difference between the 1050 ti and say a 1070 or 60?

Yes. But you have a budget.

There are plenty of benchmarks on the models so I aim to meet your numbers and for the future you can install some SSD to speed it up later.

A little cloudy.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Predator-Helios-300-7700HQ-GTX-1060-Full-HD-Laptop-Review.242962.0.html notes the little cloudy issue on the display. But it has merit for the price.

"The display backlight flickers at 119000 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 85 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 119000 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.

In comparison: 58 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 5970 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz was measured."

I have the Asus ROG and see no flickering or clouds. But it's only the older 960m which if I were to replace would be a 1050 of the new model.

-KEYBOARD LOOKS WARM in the temperature tests. This means you probably will demand a laptop cooling pad.

So there it is. Low prices mean some reduction in areas that you must decide if it matters. I had a very nice Levovo y510p with dual sli but I should have read closer about the PWM flicker. On some colors it flickers so I didn't keep it long.

Hope this helps.

Thank you

Thank you , saved me from doing the same mistake. I guess I'll go with the rog, I honestly wanted something a tad more than the 1050 so I can have something that lasts me longer.

VERY significant difference if you're a demanding gamer
Sep 13, 2017 7:00PM PDT

The difference between a 1050/1050 ti and the 1060 onwards is massive.

If you're just a casual gamer looking at playing AAA games at say, medium or lower settings on 1080p, the 1050 ti is for you. It cant, however, handle higher load like high settings on 1080p, i think gaming benchmarks put it at the low 30+ fps on demanding AAA games.

Thats where the 1060 comes in to push the fps above 60. So yes, the performance difference is big, as is the price.. You wont find a 1060 lapto for that budget, unfortunately. But the 1050ti is usually more than enough to game on if you're willing to dial back the settings below high. For MOBA games, 1050 ti is more than enough on max settings.

Can you find a 1060 equipped laptop that meets the price?

And doesn't have the issues the Acer had?

Acer is actually one of the more reliable brands lol

Like i said, for most gamers a 1050ti is actually enough for gaming. It'll run most average games like Overwatch on max-high settings easily.

The only range of games it struggles in are top-end AAA games like Doom or Witcher 3 on high settings. But AGAIN, at low to medium settings the 1050 ti can handle these games well.

So I'd go for the 1050 ti if you dont mind lowering the settings to medium.

Anyway, take a look at this:
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-GeForce-Backlit-G3-571-77QK/dp/B06Y4GZS9C/ref=pd_cp_147_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B06Y4GZS9C&pd_rd_r=G1BXCGABGVC552VNJ12M&pd_rd_w=pAmR3&pd_rd_wg=qIjXl&psc=1&refRID=G1BXCGABGVC552VNJ12M

1060 laptops are dropping in price but still break the 1000 dollar budget.

That's why I linked to the review.

The PWM alone is a killer issue here. Had one and moved on in just a few months. It's not acceptable today. The other issue was the rather warm keyboard under load. So that could be mitigated the LCD flicker was the killer.
