I Want My HD TV!

Aug 4, 2016 8:51PM PDT

No clue where to really post this so, hey, why not here?! So...short short story is, in order to upgrade to a HD converter box, DirecTV wants me to pony up for another two-year contract. Just for a damn set-top box (for an additional $10 a month)?!! Well, it ain't happenin'! Question is, I'm screwed for getting HD, right? I mean, is there any, um, other means out there to, uh, just get a damn HD signal from their dish? Nudge nudge, wink wink... Probably not, eh?

Yeah, an antenna'd help...

For the free over-the-air stuff, yes, that'd be great. I was referring to the fact that the non-broadcast/cable networks, basically everything but the broadcast networks is forever going to be a standard-definition affair from now on because DirecTV won't send me the HD set-top decoder box without locking us in for two years. Was wondering if there was some "legal" way to get their signal in HD. They say we've been "loyal customers" since '99. So loyal that they need to hook us for two more years! There's a joke in there somewhere. Thanks for the tip though!

So you want help in jacking a _____?

This is like asking help to steal a car or other thing. I hope you didn't mean to ask for that sort of help.

Here's the antenna I have behind my TV. It's HUGE but I get more channels than my neighbors.

Nope.

It is? Hmmm...well, this is the "speakeasy," right? Nah. Besides, too many people say it's quite easy to get their fix for free. Some of us are trying to stay legit. Was thinking some sort of third-party decoder to purchase that would unlock the HD signal.

If it's legit

Then no need for a back room.

A third party decoder, in the USA is currently illegal. There's some joke that the FBI spends way too much time on video piracy than other tasks.

Are you saying they don't? Wink

At this point why not?

Why not try this and find out? You have to decide if you are breaking the rules or not. I can't do that for folk.

well, if you are planning to keep them
Aug 13, 2016 3:37PM PDT

if you are planning to keep them another two years, then what is the problem? get the box free through them or pay for one.

one thing to note, over the years, Directv has sued their customers or threaten to sue them unless they paid x amount because of equipment that they did not authorized or they perceived it was being used to get their content illegally. most of those lawsuits were bull but they got away with it, for the most part.

That was easy to verify.

I don't know much about DirecTV,

it has been a long time since I done business with them but in cable, the box give you extra channels otherwise you don't have. Or are you telling me that you subscribed to HD without the box? Maybe something else is involve here (new antenna and network) installation?
