General discussion

I want a MacBook.

Dec 28, 2007 11:55PM PST

But I have questions, as ever.

-Will the low end one (1GB RAM, 144MB graphics, 80GB Hard Drive, 2.0GHz Processor) run Windows Vista OK via bootcamp or should I just stick with XP?

-Also, is it possible to upgrade those laptops with third party RAM?

-Finally... how futureproof do you think it would be?

3 questions.

1. I'd like to see 2GB. Not for the MacOSX so much but because of Vista. XP has been fine at 0.5 to 1.0GB...

2. Yes. See Crucial.com

3. Just as good as any other product. But for me if I setup mine with Macosx (natch) and those Parallels Coherence or Vmfusion I doubt I'd use any other machine for a few years.

Cool, thanks.

Maybe I should just stick with XP? I get on fine with it now but I was thinking of trying Vista, but I don't want to pay for more memory for a job that XP did fine.

Also, does Paralells allow you to run Windows apps inside the Mac OS interface, kind of like Classic did? I've never really understood how it worked but once upon a time a friend showed me a screenshot, and it was the Mac OS X with a Windows taskbar, and Windows apps and Mac apps running together. I hope that's clear enough...

Thanks for the advice!

Coherence is what I think the future is.

But available today. The OS fades away and the application just works... Parallels has a nice video out it at their website. Watch that one.

Thank you so much!

Wow, so cool. I'm definitely getting into this. I'll probably not even need to use Bootcamp then, as this will fit my needs better I think.

Cheers!

I'd think the middle 2.2Ghz model may prove more useful

If you plan on getting one, you might as well as go with the medium model with that 200Mhz boost. Plus you get the superdrive. Over the long run, it may pay off to have a little extra speed and the ability to burn to DVDs.
My friend loaded his 2.2Ghz MacBook with 4GB of RAM on Black Friday and is enjoying every minute of it. Those things are worth customizing with all the best upgrades. Go with a 250GB!!! LOL. Grin Might as well, right? But you can choose whatever you feel like choosing of course.

I guess... what is the harm in waiting extra for more....

Just have to work harder! Grin
