General discussion

I've tried everything !

Apr 29, 2004 2:56AM PDT

I started with my DT and followed the Wizard instructions, then put the floppy in the laptop and followed the instructions, but there is no connection between the computers at ALL.
I (believe) I followed the instructions to set up my desktop as server, and laptop as client. I downloaded the Microsoft Network guide but when I tried to install it, I got the message SET UP requires .NET framework. Please install .NET and run the set up again. Where do I get .NET ??

There might be some previous thread you don't refer to, but that is essential to solving your real problem. Sounds like ICS (client/server)? With a DCC (Direct Cable Connection)? But could be quite something else, of course.

No connection at ALL might simply mean the wrong cable. For a DCC (between parallel ports, or between NIC's) you need a 'cross cable' not a straight one. Or it's a failing NIC. Or no drivers installed. Or wrong settings in a few Control Panel screens.
Did you try the Network Troubleshooter? It will guide you through the common causes.

Hope this helps.

Try this:
In Internet Explorer, select Tools>Windows Update
(you are doing your regular updates, aren't you? Happy )
If you do not have .NET yet, then one of the selections there ought to say something like:
"Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1"

Freedomofchoice, And While You're At the Windows Update Site

....there is also a "recommended" update which is designed to update the Windows XP networking ability. Most users haven't installed it. You might want to install that as well. You can visit the Windows Update site, then select the "Recommended" updates, or....

Here's a direct link to that update, just in case you want to install it separately:

Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP KB817778

And maybe this one too...

Wireless update rollup package for Windows XP is available

Hope this helps.
