I've lost the bars across the bottom of screen when starting up machine

by jldipert / April 6, 2004 9:18 AM PDT

I installed a Micro Innovations Keyboard that has some wonderful features but about the same time I lost the bars that flash across the bottom of the screen that allow you with a stroke of the F8 key to perform alternate methods of booting up. I particularly miss the option of "Last known Good Configuration". Could this keyboard have something to do with this malfunction or does someone have an idea on how I can get this back?

The computer is running XP Pro as the OS and has 512Mb of Ram I can't think of anything else I've changed except changing the keyboard. I've changed the logon methods to see if that would make a difference and it has not. The "Welcome" screen and the traditional logon both act the same and neither gives me a chance to stop the normal boot up.

Thanks in advance for your help. Jim

Re:I've lost the bars across the bottom of screen when starting up machine

Perhaps try and use a different Keyboard and see if the feature reappears.

Or try system restore back to when it worked?

Then reinstall the Keyboard and see if the feature is gone again.

Re:Re:I've lost the option - "Please select the operating system to start" when starting my machine

I've tried a different keyboard and tried restoring but still do not get the message "Please select the operating system to start" Which when hitting the F8 key used to bring up all the boot options such as safe boot or Last known good configuration. The Boot.ini file looks correct. I have searched throughout Microsoft.com looking for help to no avail. Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone have any ideas for me. The computer is functioning fine now but I'd sure like to get it working properly before a problem rears it's ugly head. Thanks in advance

http://www.microsoft.com/enable/training/windowsxp/ctrlaltdeleteforlogon.aspx

Or start> run> msconfig> boot.ini> and multi0disk0partition etc etc etc line should be highlighted
make sure the timeout is at least 3 seconds

maybe start> controlpannel> switch to classic view> keyboard> under "buttons" header look for solution there. (such as what key is f8 now?) Better yet... assign an f8 key?

As well as "Global Settings" Im sure probally has some effects as well as "restore defaults" Just a few thoughts that came to mind. Good Luck!

May wanna jot down what is what or copy paste in an email to yourself results before changeing anything. Espically Global Settings?

''Boot.ini''?

The article [Q330184] discusses and gives instructions for rebuilding the Boot.ini file using the "Bootcfg.exe" tools through the use of the "Recovery Console", which might fix the situation. You'd just have to try and see.

Meet the drop-resistant Moto Z2 Force

The Moto Z2 Force is really thin, with a fast processor and great battery life. It can survive drops without shattering.
