I've downloaded the program....Now what?

by CAFinNY / December 2, 2008 5:00 PM PST

I have downloaded the Lavasoft Ad-Aware program to my desktop. Now what am I supposed to do with it?

I've tried clicking on it, but it doesn't do anything. I've tried opening it with the different ooption, but it doesn't do anything.

Was there any point in downloading this?

What exactly did you download from where?
by Kees Bakker / December 2, 2008 5:05 PM PST

- Most likely it's an exe, a zip or a msi. Check that and also post the size in bytes.
- What's your OS?
- To do something with a file you need to doubleclick, not click (single click only selects), unless you changed the defaults. It's not clear what you did.
- Also it isn't clear what "opening with the different option" is.

So please tell more.

I downloaded Ad-Aware 2008
by CAFinNY / December 3, 2008 3:39 PM PST

It shows up as a file on my desktop "aaw2008.1.2D0D17" it is an EFW File.

I have Windows XP operating system.

Double clicking on it has no results.

When I right-click on it, I get a drop downlist with the following options:Open, CA Antivirus, Open with (choice of HIPS Email Attachment Helper, Firefox, or Internet Explorer), Email w/Yahoo, Send to (With about a dozen choices), Cut, Copy, Create Shortcut, Delete, Rename, & Properties

What else would you like to know?

Possible bad download
by bldwhtguy / December 16, 2008 10:16 PM PST

Looks like you might have either d/l'd the wrong file, or the file got corrupted somehow. Try going to the ad-aware site and re-downloading the version you wanted to use. Looks like they have a trial version that is free, as well as pay versions.

As previously mentioned, the file you download should have a .exe or .zip extension to it upon completion.

That was the information I needed. I had to disable the CA Firewall, not just the Anti-Virus, but I did get it to download & install. Happy
