I think I found some new Ad Ware

Jul 2, 2004 12:54AM PDT

Hi folks, I would like to throw something out, and see if any of you have heard about it or know how to fix it.

Apparently I got a nasty piece of adware, and can't seem to remove it with AdAware or SpyBot!

What it does: while browsing on page X, I click a link to page Y, and before Y appears, I'm re-directed to a page at origins.midaddle.com that contains an ad, several seconds later, I'm re-directed back to page Y.

Google, Yahoo and MS searches have brought up nothing, except that it's sold by adspre (http://www.adspyre.com/) and I found their MidADdle promotional info here http://www.adspyre.biz/adbumb/middadle.pdf. It looks like it was introduced 1-2 weeks ago.

Any ideas as to how I can remove this bug would be gratly appreciated.

Thanks,
Polytician@yahoo.com

I have also been getting similar "inserts" which I find very annoying! The sites I'm getting are from "pcpowerscan", "mydishprovider", "zesty find", "azoogleads - T-Mobile ad", "stamps.com", etc. I cannot find the file or cookie on my machine that is triggering these. I have run SpyBot and virus scans with no helpful results.

I am also VERY interested in how to end these things.

The article [Q308446] discusses the behavior that when you visit some Web sites, a new Internet Explorer window (or in some cases, multiple new windows) may open and the instructions suggest that you disable Active Scripting in Internet Explorer to prevent most pop-up windows.

Follow up to earlier message: When I set IE to block ActiveX, etc. I found that many websites that I use didn't function. I installed Firefox 0.9x and have not had this problem since. This may be a Red Herring, but I sure do like the freedom from these extraneous pages!!!

If you cant get rid of it try doing a system restore to restore to a point where you're sure it wasn't on you're computer.

You've Been Hijacked
Jul 25, 2004 1:23AM PDT

Download HijackThis v.1.98 to its own permanent folder.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
If that link is not working, extract from http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip

To create a folder:
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.

Scan and DO NOT fix anything. After Scan, the Scan button changes to Save Log. Click that, save it somewhere. Do Ctrl-A to Select all, and then copy and paste it into a post on one of the following sites in their malware forum so an expert can tell you what to fix. It may take a few days because they are swamped, but they will get to you eventually.

Try www.PestPatrol.com. A friend recommended this to me, because my IE is hijacked. They have a free Pest Scan you can run.
