General discussion

I saw a very beautiful screensaver in a shop ..what was it?

Sep 29, 2008 11:50PM PDT

Hello!

When I was in a mall recently I passed near Apple computer and there was a screensaver working on it. Now I can't find anything similar to this .

I can describe it like this:
There was an image (regular photo) of something. The perspective of looking at the image was such as though I looked directly at it from little distance. Now the perspective slowly changed ,like the man holding the camera was being lifted in the air,so the photograph has become smaller, and it appeared there are a lot of other photographs near the picture, adjasent to it. The movement up of the camera continues and now there are really lot of small photos. The rise still continues and now we can see that the photos themselves form a pattern and as the rise continues I see that the pattern is that of another photoHappy. As the movement continues the pattern becomes more and more exact, forming new picture, untill it suddenly turns out to be a new photograph of something new. Now the screensaver begins anew movement of the camera up and.. it goes like this endlessly...

Really one of the most beautiful screensavers I've seen, never seen anything like this before.. Understand my description is not very good but if anyone has idea of how this screen saver is called or where I can buy/ download it (preferably for Windows coz I have no Mac) it would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance...
Valentin.

Two possibilities here
Sep 30, 2008 6:18AM PDT

1) It is an Apple screensaver used exclusively in the shop. If they use it routinely, I would go in there and ask them about it. In this scenario, the screensaver is most likely Mac-only, and even if it wasn't, it would probably by an Apple exclusive thing for the shop. You wouldn't be able to get it.
2) It was some sort of built-in screensaver in OS X. I went through some of the default screensavers on my Mac here, but I didn't find anything as you described it. I first thought of the iTunes Artwork option, which will display all of your iTunes music, but that wasn't it.

But, then I remembered what it is. In OS X, there is a screensaver option that is called "Mosaic", which can take all of the pictures in a given screensaver or picture folder and turn them into a collage of sorts. Pretty cool stuff. Each picture zooms out and becomes part of a larger picture, composed of other pictures in that folder or category. Windows may have a similar option, but I'm not aware of it. You'd need a Mac to make use of this same feature. And, you'd have to use your own photos to make it work. I think iTunes art does this as well, which is why I mentioned earlier... If you want, you could go try it out at the store and ask them about it, if I am thinking of the right thing.

Also, check out this link and see the screensaver features in Leopard. Be sure to check out all the other cool things in OS X too. Hope this helps.

Took a little while to figure out why I did not have a ScreenSaver called Mosaic but I found it and I must agree with OP.
That is one of the neatest screen savers I have ever seen.

Cool

OK - where?
Oct 3, 2008 4:59PM PDT

Care to let the rest of us in on the secret? Combed thru my screensavers, not there. Spotlight didn't find anything. EasyFind did better, but I'm not savvy enuff to figure out how to get something out of iPhoto or Photobooth or something called Composition in the System Library. So where did you find it, and how did you get it to run?

The answer to all questions
Oct 4, 2008 2:29AM PDT

This is the definitive answer for OS X 10.5.5

Open System Preferences, Desktop & Screen Saver.

Scroll down the left hand pane until you come to the line that says "Choose Folder"
Below that line you will (Should) see all your iPhoto albums and your Pictures folder.
Choose one (Folder that is)
In the right hand pane, just to the left of the Options button, you will see a 3 function button marked "Display Style"
Choose the right hand end of the button, if you hold the mouse there it will say Mosiac.
Hit the Test button and step away from the mouse.

Bingo, a Mosiac screen saver!

Good Luck

Thanks for sharing.
Have Mac OS X ver. 10.4.11 and can not find or do not have the "3 funtion button marked "Display Style"
is this a new feature available only to 10.5.5?
thanks again

And now for the bad news
Oct 4, 2008 8:44AM PDT

I would appear that this mosiac screen saver is only available for OS X 10.5

I just checked with my trusty Tiger laptop and there is no 3 function Display Style button.

Oh well, I'll just have to make do with a slide show on that machine

It is Mosaic Screensaver for Mac
Oct 3, 2008 5:23PM PDT

If you are using Mac OSX, go to System Preferences, click onto Desktop & Screen Saver, Display Style and you would find (i) Slideshow, (ii) Collage and (iii) Mosaic and there you goes, the screensaver that you are looking for.

No Display Style...
Oct 3, 2008 6:07PM PDT

Thanks for your time and effort, arthur2print! I wondered why I didn't have Display Style when I opened the Desktop & Screensaver System Preferences. After I un-checked the boxes for random and clock and still didn't have it, it occurred to me that maybe I needed to pick a folder with photos (not just graphics) in it. Lo and behold, that's the secret! Evidently it doesn't matter which folder you pick, Mosaic assembles all (or maybe just a lot?) of them. I now have pelicans mixed in with a rocket engine test site and my 3 year old niece. The effect is astounding!

still no Mosaic :(

Hi,
I still cann't find it... System Preff.. Screen Saver..Options... then ???
I picked a folder with pics, then went back to options and all I found was same options...Cross-fade between slide; Zoom back and fort;
Crop slides to fit screen; Keep centered and Present slides in random order... and no Mosaic. I tried selecting and deselecting between options but did not get same effect...
thanks in advance for any help you may send my way...

to the left of Options (Leopard)
Oct 4, 2008 10:04AM PDT

Display Styles, with its three settings (Slideshow, Collage, and Mosaic) are to the left of Options under the Preview window. But read the post by mrmacfixit above (And now for the bad news) also. Perhaps you're running Tiger...

No

Features such as these are built into the system. You will have to make the upgrade to Leopard if you really want this. There are several other reasons for upgrading to Leopard, like Time Machine, an improved Finder, etc. One screensaver alone isn't much of a reason to shell out $129 for a new OS. If you didn't know, you'll have to go the Apple Store and buy a new copy of OS X in order to upgrade. Again $129 for one user upgrade, or $200 for the family-pack if you have more than one Mac that you want to upgrade.

If you are using an Intel Mac and don't need a new system right away, wait for MacWorld in January and you should be able to see and/or upgrade to Snow Leopard, OS 10.6. That way, you don't have to pay for both upgrades if you still have Tiger. But we don't really know when Snow Leopard will ship, so you might as well upgrade now, if your Mac is capable of running Leopard. Good luck.
