Resolved Question

I recently built my own PC. It's been just 2 months

May 8, 2015 1:00AM PDT

And i have/or might not have a problem. But i'm not sure.

My Motherboard is Gigabyte Z87-D3HP and the question is related to that. If required. Processor - Core i5 4440, RAM - HyperX 8 GB.

I had Windows 7 previously and got Windows 8.1 PRO in the new machine. So, for restoring the files, i used the internal HDD of my Laptop as an Ext drive and it worked fine. Obviously, it had Win 7 OS files in it too.

The problem occurred when one day i started my PC when this HDD was still connected via USB. This normally SHOULDN't happen but my PC was suddenly starting Windows 7 !!

And then it showed a BSOD and i frantically turned the power off hoping that not much damage would have been done. I restarted my PC and it entered Safe Mode. It worked fine. Then i restarted, but before complete starting, i saw a page showing - - -

"Gigabyte UEFI Dual BIOS" and there was a box saying, "The primary BIOS has been corrupted" and it's being updated via the backup BIOS. Then after 100& completion of the process the pc restarted and i have since used it just fine without any issues.

But, im concerned if the Primary BIOS is completely gone! If that is the case then i'm running the backup.

How can i fix this. I'm not sure if the primary was fixed automatically in the first place. PLease help.

Thanks in advance!! Happy

Since Windows (stock) can't run off USB it will BSOD. Nothing is wrong here.

Just set your bios to not boot from USB.

Even when the PC was new and i first install Windows, i did it via DVD. I just replied to your post about that in the Windows 8 forum. http://forums.cnet.com/7723-33042_102-635194.html That's what really surprised.. This shouldn't have happened in the first place!! Anyways. As i said, the PC works fine. But i'm still not sure if i should ask for a replacement of the motherboard ( i don't know if the Main BIOS is still corrupted - i can't find how to check for that ).

Thanks Bob

I do not think the BIOS is corrupt.

The old HDD has a boot signature and as such would boot and fail due to how Microsoft didn't put in the code to handle this.

Again, nothing seems wrong here. Unless you think Microsoft needs to move out the 1980's.

As to DVD or such boot setting I've found many BIOS to be less than perfect. Does that mean they are in the stone age? You answer. So far no BIOS seems to differentiate the DVD boot from an USB DVD boot so I see nothing broke here that hasn't been broke for over a decade.

But i had nothing to do in this. From the beginning, the setting was to boot via DVD and 'not' USB, but it still happened AND that too in a working Windows machine. Win 8.1 running perfectly fine. So, how could this have happened??

I don't know where to look for the answer.
