I-pod / I-tunes assistance

trying to save my music as efficiently as possible ! Confused
my ipod classic 120 GB, 8 yrs old; holds my library as I want it...a recent purchase of a new computer and "expected transfer" of data , did not work out as planned Cry
so, have been trying to get situated w / a program to allow me to transfer the music from ipod >>>computer but would also like to transfer it to the older version of I tunes library which the said ipod has been configured for .... is there a way to tell which version that is ...w/o hooking up the ipod to the computer, and risk losing it's content (16,500 songs ) !!!

yes I do have the music backed up on an ext HD , which the "geeks" at the store eventually used to set me up again, but it is a bit messy and in the newer installed I tunes which compounds the problem, for me ... Sad

Re: iRIP

You wrote in a mail:
"regarding my iTunes/ipod predicament ... I did try to download the irip program, after being in communication with one of their "ninjas" who mentioned they had some " issues" w/ windows after it failed ,,,wrote back and basically was told ... o k looks like it won't work ...there does seem to be a number of programs out there that do similarly ...however, I have yet to hear from anyone who has had success, can make recommendations, etc. I am no whiz on the computer , but it just does not seem like it should be that difficult a project ?!?'

Then you find a friend who still has a PC or laptop with Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 and try there, it that's the program you need to solve your issue.

It appears you have many many goals. and this tells me maybe it's time to find a computer coach or consultant then tell them exactly what you want done.

I'd add to the list that you want a backup and restore system so when things break or meltdown you don't have to go through all this again.

The best I can expect is the songs are retrieved but not the tags, ratings, and organization there of. Only your newest to this would expect that when going from ipod to PC.
