But what about motherboard, video and audio drivers? Microsoft provides no offer to update those. Such errors can have this and other sources.

1. An older machine that the CPU fan is now slower, clogged or failed. That is, hardware issues such as heat, a power supply that is now overtaxed. Tip: Don't write "It worked till now." The capacitors degrade with time, along with it, capacity. Light reading at http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20040122/

2. Too many other programs running. 98 has these tiny resource pools that Microsoft never fixed to not be an issue. YOU get to manage the Optimizing Windows such as you read at http://www.aumha.org/articles.htm

3. PARASITES.
Parasite removal programs.

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0 notes the five scanning tools and removal tools that are fairly safe. If one does encounter an issue, its always been damage done by the MALWARE. The most common issue being Layered Service Provider replacement which you can use LSPFIX (Hint: use http://www.google.com to find).

The thread has follow on discussions about new links if you don't want to use Google to find an item.

Bob

PS. All the tools are free.

You maybe overtaxing the memory, in that you got too much going on in the backgrd. and/or you reached a bad spot on the memory itself. But, you need to clean the system of any malware as those are added demands on the system. Plus, if you're able, swap memory modules around(use care) and it may cause either quicker error posts or go away. If quicker, then bad memory, replace. You should also look into corrupt s/w which when called upon decides to "overrun itself" and losing control. Try the below to check and clean the system, but try memory swapping 1st. I exclude any other possible h/w faults, verify that.

1. Please let me point out that the article [Understanding and Troubleshooting Unrecoverable Errors (Faults) in Internet Explorer (Q276393)] explains that IE runs in what is known as a user-mode (or Ring3) process that means it runs in its own virtual address spaces and does not have direct access to hardware or memory that is not allocated to it by Windows. Please note however, most programs interact with user-mode processes such as ActiveX Controls, Browser Helper Objects, tool bands, and other components that can add custom functionality, such as additional toolbars, wallpaper or banner ads and etc., and anything else added and unnecessarily used for/with IE is going to slow its process.

2. Please let me point out that even though the many hyperlinks contained in the article may not appear likely to cover your reported anomaly, take the time to filter through them.
