Unless you can backup and restore your files, the answer must be no. Installing an OS is hard enough and there is never a guarantee that your files will stick around.
But if you had a few backups then it would be NO ISSUE for you to put the files back.
I have an old Inspiron 6000 and it crashed on me about a year ago. When I fixed it I downloaded Windows 7 trial onto the laptop. My main use of the laptop is to make music. However, my music program that I use needs all the root files in my hard drive to remain the same(so it can locate the sounds in each song.) Now, windows 7 is still working fine except alot of my usb instruments do not work with windows 7. Also, I have a green line running down the middle of my screen. I think this line means that my lcd is losing life. I use to hook my laptop to my flat screen tv when I had XP but now that I have a trial version of Windows 7, my pci connection to the tv is not recognized. Does anyone have a recommendation on what steps I should take to solve all these problems. Should I get an XP disc and reinstall the original OS? Will my root files stay the same with a new OS? Does anyone know how to change the display screen in Windows 7? A majority of my drivers do not work with Windows 7 because the laptop is 6-7 years old. I have the "old classic" serial number for windows xp on the bottom of my laptop. That does me no good without a windows xp disc. If I did go back to Windows XP would my files still be unmoved with the same roots, meaning C:/lab/documents/mymusic/newfolder?
