R.Hart, I'd say you're out of luck as I don't think it's possible to get the key number off of the CD. You could have gotten it prior to formatting by using a third party program but since you have formatted you're out of luck. If you can come up with a proof of purchase you may want to contact Microsoft and they may issue you a new key number but I wouldn't count on it.

Google or eBay for a replacement source
by Willy / January 19, 2006 7:01 AM PST

If you had the s/w package(CD wrapper/bundle) maybe it's there or check the system case, some vendors placed it on the case. if still no luck, then you need to buy again the s/w OS from some vendor. If you did buy fom a namebrand like Compaq, Gateway, etc., try contacting them for such. Otherwise, if this is a whole install win98 OS, you're SOL buy from eBay or google for one. As the other poster mentioned, because you reformatted you removed the chance of finding out on your HD what it was, using "Jellybean" a popular pgm. to access the key and thus re-enter it upon reloading the OS. sorry....

I downloaded the program and ran a virus check and it says 'Potentially unwanted program" for OFFICEKEY.EXE It lists this twice. Is this normal? no mention of this in the FAQ on the web page.

last night I found a piece of paper that had what I thought was the key code, and today read your message and ran the program. My virus checker popped up and said it deleted the 'office key....' but the Jellybean program displayed the Key code and it matched the piece of paper.

Thanks to all that responded.

Jellybean is a freeware pgm. and costs nothing. However, you need XP already installed and running in order to retrieve the XP key. You can google for other solutions, but all of them require you have XP currently installed in order to retrieve. Now, if your XP OS was provided by a system vendor like Dell, HP, etc., contact them for the XP recovery or install OS CDs, they do provide free(maybe S/H only under warranty period) or for low cost even if not under warranty as a service to users. If you got the full install OS, then you have to replace it, however the "XP upgrade" version provided you have an earlier windoze version to refer to(read the specs on upgrade path) before buying at less cost. Microsoft does help and replace those users that brought a upgarde or full install version once you contact them and explain the situation, etc., but again this costs but is cheaper than store brought.
Thers is no easy solution for lost XP keys mother tahn above, LEGALLY. Even then other solutions may not work or be a ploy for malware, etc..

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
