I Need Modem Help

by Shadowflight-200819580091 / June 30, 2004 11:51 AM PDT

I recently migrated to XP from Win98. My fax/answering machine stopped working, so I bought HotFax version 5.0, thinking that my old fax program was not XP compatable. HotFax didn't work. Further checking led to my modem (Gateway softmodem), which could not be upgraded to XP. Time for a new modem.

I suppose it is best to get a controller-based version, but since I have HotFax, I don't think I need to spent $100+ to get a faxmodem. I want to utilize the answering machine feature in HotFax, so the modem needs to support voice also. (Probably all do that anyway.)

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, inexpensive modem that will work well with HotFax?

The answer is to look to the maker of Hotfax and see what modems they support. Don't guess.

I tried that.

In my initial discussions with HotFax they said any US Robotics would work fine. Since I was going to have to buy something, I asked if they could suggest a specific model. I said since I had a clean shot at getting the most appropriate, I might as well get "the best" (for their software). Thats when they suggested I upgrade to either Zoom, Multitech, or Intel. I started checking web sites for the aforementioned three, and found quite a selection, including a $12 model from Intel. Based on the little I know, I guess it would work.

Thats when I posted my request here. I figured somebody here must know a whole lot more than I do, and might be willing to offer a suggestion. Maybe even, somebody else here is using HotFax and can give me the benefit of their direct knowledge.

They don't make it easy from what I read.

You can get some clues that your modem must have a voice chip. I can bet at under 20 bucks it won't.

http://www.modemsite.com/56k/voice.asp plus the above would have me shopping for a modem that has "voice modem" noted plus bundled software such as noted.
