I need knowledgable advice

Sep 20, 2005 5:02AM PDT

So I finally saved up enough money to splurge on a decent digital camera. I'm so nervous to purchase anything though without getting some advice first; because countless friends have made purchases and had cameras break within a year.

So....anyone know of a camera off the bat that will be fairly durable, at least 5mpx, very very crisp colorful images, and a very quick reaction time between pushing the capture button and the picture being captured? I do want features though, such as black and white, sephia, and the ability to slow down or increase my shutter speed. I'd love the ability to zoom in to about the detail of the center of a flower and all staying crisp still.

I'm sorry to sound like such a newb, but I'm hoping someone can point me in a few directions.

I've considered Sony Cybershot, Nikon Coolpix, and Kodak Easyshare.... if there are any big warnings against these brands or models, please don't hesitate to inform me.

Anywhere from $200-$400 comfortably.

I will go $500 if it's just too good to be true.
