My suggestions.

Forget about upgrade and go build a new one and use the old one for surfing or just paper weight. You are not going to save much if any at all. Just my 2 cents.

Start from new as previous poster said

If money is tight you could salvage the drives, RAM if it's DDR2 & video card if it's separate and not on board. Purchasing a new case will allow you to use any motherboard you like without costing a lot.
The other problem you will have replacing the motherboard & cpu in that machine is the operating system and drivers that came from HP if it's HP's instalation cd's which won't work on the new board and you will need to purchase a new copy of Windows XP.

The joys and pains of being a gamer

In reply to: hmmm

A Pentium D computer still should be a great computer for many purposes, just not today's best for high-end gaming.

You have run into one of the main reasons that many forgo the big name desktops and build their own.
