Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista? Linux? Apple OS/X? That really makes a difference, you know.
And what's the connection on the hard drive: USB2.0 or Firewire?
A warning to begin with: external drives are somewhat more error prone than internal drives. So expect it to break down sometime in the future. Then you'll lose everything that's on it, and you don't have elsewhere. It's definitely a bad idea to store information on the external drive ONLY.
