Question

I need help with my desk-top, and laptop units

Jul 21, 2011 9:47AM PDT

For one thing, I have what my laptop calls a DVD- device, which has decided not to read either DVD, nor CD, discs.

Second, I have an external DVD-WRITER, on my desk top.

The problem is that, everytime I go to a web-site, asking the very SIMPLE question: Why doesn't my device work as advertised?

What do I get back, from Microsoft, or any other web-site?

Is it ever the very simple:

Go into menu, go to programs, go to device, select device, and check if status is CAN record OR canNOT record

N-O

All I get back, from the internet is "What is the sub-processor of your unit", or "Precisely which part, of Region 1 are you located in?", or my personal "favorites" What exact category of discs are you trying to work with/copy/ OR what sub-type, of Mpeg 4 sub-category 17, section 25, sub-layer alpha are you trying to use?

NONE of the responses are in regular English.

Do people, on the internet really ENJOY making others feel like brainless "retards"? Why dont intenet users ever just say "If you use Windows XP, check file 25. If it is "bad", then dump it, and replace it with a new version".

Would it really KILL the computer geeks to use simple, regular, ENGLISH when communicating with other HUMANS?

OR, is it that compuetr pro's just love to feel "superior", by sending answers, which only other geeks will understand?

Maybe, this is a "Rant", but d*it, I want to set up my machine, for my purposes, and instructions, which no one, below graduate student level can understand, are NO help at all.

I think you may enjoy one of the new Apple machines. The entire package is engineered so we don't have to tinker.

Maybe it's time to move to a new system?

It usually helps to know how old the now not working component is - they don't last forever.

What EXACTLY do you mean by "Why doesn't my device work as advertised?" What are you trying to get the external drive to do? How are you attempting to do what you want to do? WHAT is it advertised to do?

Believe it or not, but you have to help others help you as we aren't mind readers and try not to *** U ME

Re: DVD's

CD and DVD drives, like all hardware, sometimes breaks down and fails. If that's the case, we install a new drive and it works again.
Sometimes - especially with burners after messing with burning software - there's a software or setting error. That's shown by an exclamation mark with the device in Device Manager.
That are the two most common answers to your question "Why doesn't my device work a advertised" for your laptop drive.

Luckily, it seems that your external drive connected to your desktop works. Then there's a very good chance it will work also when connected to your laptop. Worth a try.

Is this a clear answer? If not, please tell what's unclear about it.
