I need help with air flow for fans.

Nov 28, 2004 12:39AM PST

I have the pc fan circulating over the heat sink and the power unit fan blowing out. My case doesn't seem to be very air-friendly. My chip sits on the side under the power unit, so that area gets quite warm. I have a case fan area on the rear below the power unit that I want to add a fan. Should it be pulling in to bring in cooler air? Do I need an additional pc slot fan?

What direction should the air circulate with my setup? Thank you in advance.

The short answer is... You must have air intakes and air exhausts... Some cases have to be modified extensively and some you can remove the extra metal plates where spare CDROM drives might go to let in/out more air.

And a top exhaust is a well known cooling tip such as http://www.virtual-hideout.net/images/q500_13.jpg

Finally the age old trick is to just leave the case cover off till you have time to work on it.

HEAT KILLS.

you could check out the following site

I agree with the other two posts.
i taped over the holes in the side of my case at the top and lowered the case temp by 6 degrees.

Rule of thumb

Here's a good rule of thumb, you want frt. fans blowing IN, rear fans blowing, OUT. Install fans as necessary, even if you need a slot type fan(s), most of these blow out. However, some do blow "at/directional" in order to directly cool something, like a video card. Some extra internal fans just move air to help in plain old circultation. Further some users make a "blow hole" on top of case to increase OUT/exhaust of air. Can you handle all that
fan noise? Silly

good luck Happy -----Willy
