Question

I need help to figure out what kind of RAM chip I need tobuy

Jun 22, 2012 2:25AM PDT

Hello, I have 2 Gbs of RAM and would like to buy 1 more Gb RAM chip for my Gateway, Vista SP2 32 bit computer. These are the specs I could find: IE 9, Directx 10, 2 intel CPU 6300 at 1.86 Ghz. The graphics: intel G965 express chipset family. = GMA 3000. 2 Gbs of physical memory on 1 Gb per chip. Memory bank: CHAN A DIMM O,
Device locator: J6H1, Speed 533 Mhz , Data width: 64 bit slot. The other chip: CHAN A DIMM O is same as 1st chip except the device locator is: J6J1., Speed 533Mhz. 64 bit chip.
And Motherboard is: Intel DG965OT,
Ser # BQOT64500BOX, Bios: Default system Bios.
I used to know of a web site where I could put in name of computer and all the other info and the web site would tell me what RAM chip I needed, but I don't know it now. Would any one please help me to figure out the RAM chip name and number I need or a web site name where I can put in the numbers and get the name and type of RAM chip I need?? Thanks for any and all help??

Chip or stick?

I think that computer and motherboard and the sticks you need are at Crucial.com

You elected to not share or I can't find the model number of the PC so I can't supply a direct link today.

Head to crucial.com and find those memory sticks.

Here's your best option...

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=GM5420&Cat=RAM

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 8GB
Slots: 4 (Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 2GB per slot.* *Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

NOTE: Maximum memory using PC2-4200 or PC2-5300 is 8192MB. Maximum memory using PC2-6400 is 4096MB.Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

Let us know how it works out.

How to Find RAM for your PC
Jun 24, 2012 3:06AM PDT

You can just Google "RAM for Gateway GM5420" and the search results will come up with a bunch of places you can buy it, Crucial being one of them. On Crucial's site, you can even have them scan your PC system to see your exact configuration. They are showing 4 different options for memory and they sell them in kits (ie: 2 x 1GB, 2 X 2GB, etc..) Part#s CT651334, CT651320, CT764460, and CT651327.

Or you can just do a Google search for "DDR2, 533MHz, PC4200 dual channel memory" and again you will find results for a bunch of places selling it, all different brands of memory. You can look through them and decide what you want to spend. It looks like your PC can take up to 8GB total of memory and there are two slots.

Thanks for the good ways to find what I need.

Thanks to both of the last 2 guys who gave me good answers to my ?'s. I need to open up my computer to see if there's 2 or 4 slots. I read my 32 bit vista can not use more than 3 Gb's.. So buying 4 to 8 Gb's of ram will be just wasting the memory and money. Thanks for all the good help where to buy and find what I need, thanks.

Agree in part...but why not just go to 4GB using a 2GB

kit that matches generally what you have ? Keep in mind that systems like yours have a dual channel architecture so having an odd number of DIMMs....say 3 x 1GB DIMMs puts your system into the single channel mode vice the dual channel mode you get when running 2 DIMMs or 4 DIMMs with matching DIMMs in each channel (A and or B).

Are you never upgrading that PC to Win 7 where you could use the full 4GBs or perhaps 8GBs ?
