I need help! Emachine or Windows CP not sure which

Jun 4, 2005 6:38PM PDT

I have an Emachine T1600 (I knowits older)

It was fine until I installed SP2 - I sdtarted having problems with my Windows Installer - Registry Files etc... I also can't run defrag, so I removed SP2, and talk about slow....

I had to then replace the Power Supply and Motherboard. I can use the computer but haven't defragged because it won't run. I have thought I should reformat the hard drive, but it won't let me do that either witht he disk that came with it.

Ic an't install some software because I keep getting an installer error.

I can't afford a new oerating system thats for sure.

Running Windows XP
40 GB
512 RAM
CD Writer and DVD Writer

I don't belive I have had any virus, but I had regularly run AdWAre/ PCScans

I have also tried doing things in safe mode etc..

Please I need tog et this machine in working order if anyone can help Iwold greatly appreciate it.

restore disk?

If you have a restore disk put it in the cd drive and reboot it should restore your computer to as when new. You will loose all else.

You need to tell more....

of the XP cd you are using. Pirated versions will test your skill levels and a motherboard change will definitely choke XP.

In most cases, OEM XP versions are coded....

to the machine they are sold with. A new motherboard constitutes and new machine to your XP disk. A new version of XP is now needed.

This is done by design, courtesy of MS.

This stuff was haopppening before the mother board was replaced.
I can't afford a new operating system - if thats the case thats stinks - there's got to be a programmer who can get around that because that just istn't right -

One of the reasons Emachines...

and other econo-boxes are so cheap, is the use of XP versions which are usable on that one machine. MS cuts them a break and the saving is passed on to you (sort of). I have had family members buying Dells which ship with no OS disk at all. Unless you call and complain, you are out of luck.

Cheap way

You could buy an O.E.M. version of XP for about half the price of a retail version. I did this on my old PC and it worked fine. You don't get full retail support from MS, but it works! Try this link and get it for a little over $80Happy http://www.directdeals.com/item_OEM-WINXPHDSP2.aspx
