I Need Help Dividing a Large Folder for Archiving

by Gregness / December 29, 2009 12:11 PM PST

Hi Folks,

My "My Pictures" folder is filled with 13.4 GBs of Photos that I would like to archive to DVDs. Is there any software that will simply split(or copy and split)the folder into 4.7 Gig folders so I can archive to DVDs but without compression or encryption. I guess I could do the math but I thought I would see if there's anything first. Any other suggestions on what I should do?

Thanks in advance!

Think I'd do it manually rather than trying a sw program

to split it. You could do it manually by file date, file name, etc.

Not sure how you'd tell what's on what disc otherwise.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'm looking for something that would just grab the folder and divide it up into specified sizes automatically. Ah well, I'll break out my 'ol trusty calculator.

I Do It Manually Using Secondary Folders
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / December 30, 2009 12:39 AM PST

I create new folders with names that identify the picture types, then I drag the associated photos to that folder.. For example: "Misc Family Photos" contains those types of pictures.. "Christmas 2009" contains those photos, etc.

Once you've organized the photos by type, you can hover your mouse over the photo to quickly determine the space needed for burning to a disc.

I've found no software that will automatically do what I want in this regard.

Hope this helps.
