Yes, this is what I did when I went on The Maid in the Mist boat at Niagara Falls. Worked great.

I need a digital camera capable of daily use outdoors in inclimate weather and one that can be knocked about a little. High mega pixels is not a priority. Any sage wisdom?

Everything you want and more.
It even works under water.
To a depth of 33 feet.

It is waterproof like advertised but is totally electronic so it is difficult to switch between the different modes.
It also takes lousy pictures. A poor and small lens.
You have daily inclimate weather, that is depressing, sorry. If you don't like the Olympus camera suggested above, then you can get a camera that you like and buy a covering to protect it against the inclimate weather. As mentioned above, there is waterproof plastic camera bag that you can buy online. With these bags, you can even go swimming and diving (but always read its depth limits and proper usage procedures before use). Or some manufacturers made dedicated underwater housing for certain cameras that gives even more sturdy protection. These housings are made of hard plastic and some of them can go down to 130 feet under water, more than enough to protect against harsh weather. There are third parties like Ikelite that makes housing that fits your camera (they can even custom make it at a cost), but they are costly.
Of course there are pro cameras that are weather sealed and are rugged enough to be used daily outdoor in inclimate weather, but these are expensive (thousands). You need both weather sealed camera body and lens (cheap lens won't work).
