General discussion

I need a new camera & I'm useless at specs, help.

Hi all.

I currently have an SD700 IS (I know, old school right.) Honestly I don't want to retire it since I couldn't be happier but I have no choice since it's showing signs of age. So I'm trying to find its successor. Research shows that that would be the SD850 but that's discontinued. Any idea what would be next after that? Or at least the most current version of the SD700.

I'm your regular, plane jane user but the main things I care highly about:
1) Shooting Speed (it needs to be FAST as my 700 is a speed demon)
2) Viewfinder (as in I want one..preferably)
3) 4x Optical Zoom (ideally no less since the SD700 is at 4x)
4) Manual mode (though it doesn't have to be too manual) and scenes (which I think are standard in the powershot series)
Basically I want to get as close to my SD700 as possible. I'm biased for the Powershot Series.

The SD780 & SD1200 that's currently out now seem to have stellar reviews. My problem is neither fared well in Shooting Speed and FPS per the CNET reviews (compared to the 700). Any suggestions, thoughts?

Thanks so much.

SD940?
Mar 13, 2010 8:33AM PST

Would the SD940 be better than the 780? I don't it doesn't have the viewfinder though. How about the ZS3? How does that compare? I know it has more zoom. I'm looking for an all-around general use camera. Thanks!

SD780 - SD940

Neither Canon camera is better than the other.
They just have different features.
The SD780 has a viewfinder the SD940 does not.
The SD940 has a wide angle lens.
The SD780 has a normal angle lens.
Both have a very short shutter lag (0.2 second)

The Panasonic ZS3 does not have a viewfinder.
It has a wide angle lens that is also 12X zoom.
It has a normal shutter lag (0.6 second)

Again, it is not a matter of one being better than the other.
It is a matter of which has the features you want.
