Question

I need a copy of WindwsXP professional

Jul 29, 2011 11:50AM PDT

I purchased a latop from a recycle center and it has no OS. The tech told me they do not install opperating systems, however he did show me the CD key for the laptop. Since it had WindowsXP Professional on it that is the OS I will need, I am even willing to burn it to a cd if I can find it.

Answer
That key is usually only good with the copy for that maker.

The tech told me all I needed was the disc

It is an HP NC6000 P4 laptop with 512mb DDR memory and 2.5" IDE drive and 40GB IDE HDD and it used to have WindowsXP Professional on it, but the drive is wipped clean. The tech also told me I could put Windows 7 on, but I don't think it has enough RAM. Anyway this is all I know, hope it helps.

I ran 7 on a P4 with no HT.

Only the patient folk would do that (I had 1GB).

That CD KEY is for the HP issued XP CD. Many folk (re)discover this later.

You'll want to up the RAM and get a new faster HDD if you want to try Windows 7. For now I suggest you install UBUNTU to get some use from the old dog.

---> Dog? Yes DOG!. Pentium 4 based machines (not talking about the P4M series) are well know to burn folk as the DESKTOP CPU gets hot and the fun begins. We've been able to save a few from insanity (or pull them back from the edge) by finding and installing slower clocked P4's.

Huh?

What is UBUNTU? I am looking for a CD of WindowsXP Professional that I can boot from and install. Heck, I'll even go backwards to 98 or 95 (might lose the WIFI capibility though). How do I get this UBUNTU? Why do I need it? I really don't want to invest a lot into this as I am not sure the wie will even use it. I just wanted something she can call her own, because she does not use the desktop PC or the refurbished laptop I bought last year.

Without costs of buying XP CDs or restore media. Things like web browsing, email, documents are all in that OS and CD at http://www.ubuntu.com/

I noted it because to run 7 or to get the right CDs might be costly.

Folk are reporting these are copies.

That is, not the silver factory made media. If so, this means that they are selling you less than a dollar of media and not legit. They may not be around long.

I think I solved the problem

Against advice here I decided to try the restoration CDs I had. Granted it was for a Dell PC and Vista not XP, but since I had a blank hard drive I figured I would try it. During the installation I was never prompted for a prodect key. Windows is running and I was able to install Norton360 (licenced for 3 pcs, only had it on 2 prior to this) and MSHome and Offic e 2007 (also licenced for 3). The laptop is running except for one thing which may be a driver issue. When I bought the laptop they gave me 2 Cisco Systems Wirelss LAN adapters. I can't seem to get windows to acknowledge either one of them. It also might be an issue with my router factored in. I am going to contact CISCO and see what they have to say.
