Question

I Might Have Adware... How Do I Get Rid Of It?

Sep 25, 2017 9:30PM PDT
Here's a screenshot of the banner I'm referencing in this forum.

Hi all! I think I have a case of adware. I can type something into the Google search engine, like "shop computer monitor," and in addition to Google pulling up the appropriate websites a banner will appear at the top of my browser, which annoyingly suggests bargains and retailers based on what I searched. Is this adware?

Whatever it is, I feel like it's paying too much attention to things I'm typing... Is there a security concern with this? For instance, could it potentially steal username and password information when I login to an account online?

Anyways, my main question is how do I get rid of it? Is there a tool that something like Avast Free Antivirus provides that can get rid of it, or would weeding out this little nuisance require a lot more work?

Thanks in advance!

Avast

Open the user interface/settings.
Put check in scan for pups.
Run a scan, see if it finds anything.

Next step up is adwcleaner....use google.

This Helped Me Find The Answer
Sep 26, 2017 9:29AM PDT

I ran Avast, having it check for pups, but no results. I then used Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool, and...... no results. I neglected to mention in my original post that I also have Avira, and while I was going through both the Avast and Avira extensions I have for Google Chrome, I stumbled on the "Show price comparisons" feature that the Avira Browser Safety extension auto-enables. Sooo, I guess it wasn't adware, it was just an incredibly annoying feature that my antivirus threw in my face (I suppose it would be helpful to some, but I personally don't like it). Once I disabled this feature, the banner hasn't showed up since. YAY!!

Thanks for leading me to the answer!

Sorry everyone, I just figured out what the issue was. In addition to Avast, I also have Avira, which has an Avira Browser Safety extension on my Google Chrome browser. I just figured out that one of it's settings is to "Show price comparisons" from trusted sources, in the form of this annoying banner... This feature has been auto-enabled for months, and I just now figured it out Sad

Thanks for trying to help anyways everyone! I apologize for my ignorance!
