I'm using Foxit Reader, so can I delete Acrobat?

Oct 15, 2009 4:59AM PDT

Do I have to retain Acrobat to run the Adobe Flash Player? I understand Adobe Air depends on Acrobat. I was considering deleting it, if it's not necessary for everyday web browsing.

You can uninstall Acrobat if you want.,,
Oct 15, 2009 5:22AM PDT

It isn't needed to run Flash Player. There's Flash Player plug-ins for both IE and Firefox, if needed.

What's Adobe Air all about?

Is it necessary to run other programs?

It's Not Worth Much.. Adobe's New Reader 9.2 Installer...
Oct 15, 2009 12:20PM PDT

...doesn't install it as long as you get the correct full downloadable installer from their site.I've now updated about 50 computers with the full installer and it doesn't install the added stuff. Apparently, they decided not to include it Adobe.com and Adobe Air in the new version of the installer because they got too many complaints.

Hope this helps.

Depends On What You Mean By 'Acrobat'..
Oct 16, 2009 4:31AM PDT

There is an Adobe Reader program and Adobe Acrobat program, two separate things.. The Reader is the free basic program which opens/views PDF files.. The Adobe Acrobat program is a full-fledged suite which creates, edits, and views documents including PDF files and it's EXPENSIVE, a few hundred dollars.. Most importantly, if you only want Foxit Reader and Adobe Flash on the computer, you don't need EITHER of the two items above but you won't be able create PDF documents if you uninstall the full Acrobat program.. Flash and Foxit will work fine without the other tools.

The Adobe Reader 9.2 installer I mentioned earlier is only for the Reader version and if you want Foxit, then you probably don't need both.

And you can uninstall Adobe Air and Acrobat.com which were placed there by earlier versions of the Adobe Reader installations. They aren't necessary.

So which is it?

I think you can create PDF documents with Foxit add-on.
Oct 16, 2009 4:53AM PDT

Open Foxit Reader and click on the Help tab. Then, click on Check for Updates Now. You will see a list of add-ons including Foxit PDF Creator and Foxit PDF Editor. HTH.

Thanks to everyone responding to my questions. Happy

Oct 16, 2009 8:52AM PDT

I just checked my Belarc print outs and it shows that i have
Adobe Acrobat Version 9.2.0.124
Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager Version 1.0.5.0.
Adobe Reader Version 9.2.124

I only downloaded Reader so maybe there is a free version of Acrobat
bundled with it? Confusing! lol

Anyway, thanks for your answer Grif.I will just let it lie until a situation arises requiring further action. Fish

IF you decide to go with Foxit make sure to uncheck ASK ..
Oct 16, 2009 5:58AM PDT

Fish..

As already noted, if you decide to go with Foxit, keep your eye out (not literally!) for the offer to use Ask.com, as your "default search". Uncheck the box, next to License Terms, where the offer for the toolbar is made. SEE this. It came preticked, some months back. I don't know if it's changed since then, but I tend to doubt it. But please look for it. You don't need (or want) the toolbar. Did I forget to add .. IMHO? Well, it is my "humble opinion"! Happy

More about the toolbar here:

Why I Flushed Foxit

You can download Foxit from here. Choose the last (.msi) version and you shouldn't have a problem.

In a nutshell Wink ......

Foxit
Oct 16, 2009 11:22AM PDT

I just updated Foxit reader and both the ask and toolbar are present and checked.

Unchecked and all updated no problem.

As far Adobe acrobat and air and reader they came with the Vista Home Premium operating system. I uninstalled all and use Foxit Reader.

Hi Stranger..

Thanks for the confirmation. I figured the toolbar was "alive and well", but without having (recently) installed it, I wasn't completely sure.

Now that I think of it, I'M the stranger. Not you! Sad

Is the "full downloadable installer from their site" the 43.5 MB download that states "including Acrobat.com on Adobe Air"?

Two more ?s for Grif....
Oct 18, 2009 3:22PM PDT

Hi again Grif -- Adobe 9.2 is installed....did you remove AdobeARM from Startup? I am guessing it is O.K. to do so.

Are you still recommending uninstalling old version of Adobe Reader before installing new version? I was lazy and installed over old, but this 7-year old computer will soon be replaced with a new one with Windows 7 so I am not as fussy as I used to be.

I Installed 9.2 Over the Top On Most Of Our Comps..
Oct 19, 2009 5:02AM PDT

The previous version here was 9.1.3 and the 9.2 version installed fine on them all WITHOUT uninstalling the previous version.

And yes, "AdobeARM.exe" and "Reader_sl.exe"can be UNCHECKED in "msconfig".

Hope this helps.

Hi Grif -- There are times when I know what needs to be done, but still need someone wiser to give me the O.K. Happy

BTW I do not uncheck in msconfig Startup -- instead I remove from the Registry. Used Selective Start in Win98 computer, but when I got WinXP computer, an MS tech told me XP operated best when not in Selective Start. That said, I have also been told by others that removing a program this way could interfere in the future when uninstalling/removing the entire program from the system...... but have not had any problem in that area.....possibly because I usually do a manual cleanup after the removal, including the Registry as well.

Should I have not listened to that MS tech in 2002 which was so long ago in computer years ???? Happy,

Either, Or... I'm Not Sure It Matters...
Oct 19, 2009 12:41PM PDT

Most of the Msconfig\Startup listings actually originate in the registry listings such as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Eliminating the entry from those locations will frequently remove them from Msconfig\Startup.

Take care.

Exactly.....almost
Oct 19, 2009 1:32PM PDT

Yes, that is where I go in the Registry to remove an Msconfig/Startup listing.....and my experience has been that it always removes the listing Wink

Foxit Reader
Oct 26, 2015 2:57PM PDT

I am always use only Foxit Reader and I find it works without problems. The program is a lightweight, fast and allowes to work with PDF files. Later I used another program but it was much worse that Foxit Reader. It makes my job easier.
