I had some other thoughts on a few.

California = Where Mexicans and olives come together.

Hawaii = where only Kenyans dream of becoming President

Indiana = the state with no Indians

Alabama = United what?!

Maine = 6 months indoors, 6 outdoors

Maryland = A state divided really can stand

Mississippi = Have you see our river?

Nebraska = Land of the corny jokes

Minnesota = We fell down from Canada

Missouri = Misery or Missouri, what's the difference?

New Jersey = The Garbage State

Montana = We are not Minnesota

Nevada = No, we aren't square

North Carolina = We invented spitoons

New Mexico = the Old Mexico sucked

Ohio = Midwest slang for "Hi y'all"

Oregon = No Thyme either

Pennsylvania = Alternate Germany

Washington = Year long Rain Festival

West Virginia = Abandoned by Virginia

Wisconsin = Home of Velveeta

Wyoming = Lots of Roaming

A friend and her husband, an M.D., came to NM to set up in an under-served area; treatment in exchange for chickens and so on. They looked for the poorest counties and settled on the one next door to mine. The only other poorer was in MS.
