I'm going to say this is another false report and there's someone that is spamming this forum with all these reports in order to try to hurt Canon, and they keep bringing up Sony.
Holes in the story:
The chronology does not fit with the A70 being released in 2003 and the SD800 released in 2006. So since you need a camera now because of the broken cameras, that would mean that you had an A70 that lasted 5 years. Pretty good for a cheap camera.
With you living in France, you would not have the SD800, but you would have the IXUS 850. You must not know enough about Canon that they label the Elphs a different model number in Europe.
This forum is here to help answer questions, not to spam everyone else. If I'm totally off, then could you show some photos of your small town in France, shot with the SD800....the info will be in the EXIF data on what camera was used and when.
I know they're supposed to be the best on the market, but after two bad experiences with Canon, I'm done. Our A70 cacked after two years (off warranty of course) and exactly one week after our $500 SD800 went off warranty, I had a lens malfunction (like the E18 Canon is famous for) that's supposed to cost $200 to fix. So, ferget it, I'm done with Canon.
I'm also done spending $500 on a digital camera. We have one high-end film camera, we want a digital for on-the-go stuff, pics for our blog, making little short films, etc. The SD800 was a 7.1 megapixel and a 3.8 optical zoom; I know a year after I bought that thing, I can get as good or better for half the money. The question is: which one. I hear good things about Sony; my local electronics store (I live in a small town in France) says Pentax makes a good camera. What would you suggest, in the $250 range, to replace this camera. I hear there's a class-action suit against Canon for their crappy lens gears; I hope they get taken to town. They'll never see another cent from me.
Thanks for your thoughts.
