Question

I'm building a custom pc and could use some advise

Nov 29, 2013 5:28PM PST

Hi guys,

I'm building a custom pc with a budget of $600. I've picked out the parts but if there's a better part, please advise me on it. Below are the details:

CPU: Core i5-4570

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87-D3HP

Video Card: Gigabyte GF GTX650 OC 1GB DDR5

Memory: Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600 (2x4gb)

Optical Drive: Lite-On 24xSATA

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB

Power Supply: Cooler Master GX-550W

Case: Cooler Master K280 - I'm choosing this case as it's a budget case with a usb 3.0 port at the front. I would love to hear about any suggestions for a case that has 2 usb3.0 ports in front, possibly a window, dust filters, and good cable management for good air flow. I know it's crazy but anyone has an idea for such a case?

This pc will be used mostly for gaming, MS Office and web browsing. Also can anyone recommend if I should be using Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 Ultimate for this build. Oh and I'm a noob so I don't do any overclocking. Thanks in advance

Answer
Have you used a dust filtered case before?

I find them clogged and choking in under a few months and the owners a little upset. Be sure you know what you are in for. It looks like this is for gaming so heat buildup due to the lower air volume is almost a sure bet. It would be a shame you invest in dust filters then have to toss them.

Today's cables are usually small such as SATA so the old issue of air blockage is rare today. I have to think you are thinking of those old wide IDE cables.

No, I haven't had a case with dust filters before

Hi sorry for the late reply, had internet issues. Thank you for your insight on dust filters guess I need to rethink that one. As you've mentioned that I will most probably be getting a high heat in the build, any recommendation to curb it? Does adding an additional side fan to the case help?

That and clean filters.

But most eject the filters later as they clog and need replacement so adding more fans just means more airflow and the sooner the filter fills up.

I'm quite limited on choices. Any recommendations?

Hi, I've been told a few times that one should choose the same manufacturer for both motherboard and video card. What is your take on that as I've selected a Gigabyte motherboard, my choices for a Gigabyte video card is quite limited from where I am and there's a budget constrain. Additionally, will the Gigabyte HD7770 OC 1GB DDR5 perform better? Should I choose a cheaper motherboard and spend it on a better video card instead? Thanks in advance.

My take

You can mix and match mobo's and gpu's........should not be a problem.

Take the bucks assigned to the gpu and go to Tom's.
See what's the best card in that price range.

Ok I'll head over to Tom's
