XP still keeps working for many years to come on the hardware you have. But you won't get highers versions of Internet Explorer (that some sites expect) and you won't get drivers for your latest printer and you'll find more hackers attacking your system, because Microsoft doesn't plug holes in XP anymore.

So our advice is to make an 'image' of your system on an external hard disk regularly, so you can go back to the latest image if something fatal happens. And, of course, back up all things that you don't want to lose if you restore that image.

As stated

As stated, XP won't suddenly stop working in a week when the support finally ends, but there will not be any more fixes coming for security or any other issues. So starting on 4/9/14, it will be open season on anyone still using XP. All the exploits that criminals have been sitting on, waiting for the day XP support ends, will immediately start being used to compromise XP systems.

Other software will also gradually stop working as newer versions come out and developers do not want to bother supporting XP any longer. Old versions will continue to work, but you will be unable to upgrade and keep using XP at the same time.

XP is over 11 years old now, it has lasted longer than it should have by any reasonable standards. Rather than trying to find ways to fight a losing battle, you should be focused on ways to transition to something else. Be that Windows 8, Linux or some other option.
