I lost my volume control while downloading windows me update

I have been trying to figure out how to get back my volume control the past few days. I listen to audio alot while reading my emails, etc. so it's driving me crazy! It happened when I went to the Windows ME updates page, and it downloaded a bunch of programs, such as Notepad, Drivespeed, and High Color to name a few. After I went to the volume button on the bottom of the screen, it was gone! I'm thinking I have to erase a program to get it back up, but am not sure... Is there anyone out there who knows what to do in this situation? Any tips? Any will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Check this, display the volume icon in the taskbar notification area, you must select the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" check box in Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices applet.

The Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel did not work

In reply to: tigerlily01

I went into the Control Panel, then clicked on the Sounds and Audio icon, then the sound names popped up, but was no way able to retrieve the volume control bar to go back up to the bottom of the screen. It had a mic setup, different sounds for a new message, for example, and naming different sound setups. I have alot new "links" on the bottom of the screen that took the place of the volume control, and thinking I may have to delete 1 or more to retrieve it. I don't know. Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Like you said this occurred after the updates.maybe try process of elimination by removing one at a time.At least this way you will know if the updates are the problem.

You also mentioned that many links are on the bottom of the screen that took the place of the volume control, try removing some and see what happens.

Point being, you probably have too address these possible causes first.

How do you delete or move the file/program?

In reply to: tigerlily01

Ok. I know I can delete files, but don't exactly know how. Can anyone tell me how to do it? Moving them, if possible would be even better, but I must not have the room or something.

Re-install Windows Me. That will replenish your volume icon, for sure. It'll take you about roughly 45 minutes. Time well invested when you think of all the time you've spent trying to figure it out.

Hope this helps.

did not work. the checkmark was there, but faded/frozen.

I was close this time, but still have not been able to get my volume control back. I got as far as sound media, then was unable to go past that. I tried to go through the files to see if it would let me uncheck the checkmark after changing one or two things, but was unable to do that, too.
I have a icon of a monitor, and an icon for of a processor in place of the horn icon that was in there before. I want to get rid of them so maybe my sound will replace it. I don't know how or if i can. Any one else know how I can do that? Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks!!!!....

yo i had the same exact problem today but i figured it out!!

ok first right click 'my computer' then click 'properties'. go to the 'device manager' tab. click the + sign for 'sound, video and game controllers'. next duble click one of the 'ESS' links or w/e is under the 'sound, video and game controllers'. first make sure that in the 'general' tab in the device usage the first box for 'disable in this hardware profile' is unchecked and th second box for 'exists in all hardware profiles' is checked. next click the 'driver' tab and click 'update driver'. follow the wizard directions and install the best driver.the volume will come back after that. your welcome
