I *LIKE* the UMPC Origami Toy

Mar 11, 2006 11:43AM PST

The buzz-pop-fizz of Microsoft's (don't lie-Intel's) UMPC toy was unfortunate. I saw something in the videos that I imagined being pretty useful, given a second generation. What it LOOKED like they were going to have was:

GPS and location-aware services.

A neat gaming device (especially if two licensed owners of the apps at home could bluetooth fight it out.

Wireless broadband internet, for rich media messaging, but also for remote office niftyness. (And VoIP would work just fine there, right?)

Okay, honestly, when I see the Origami, I think of the "decks" from Neuromancer, and I want that badly. Couldn't this be the device that most closely resembles a deck? (The Nokia 770 would be a close runner up, but I imagine that'll die faster, because it only has linux diehards behind it).

Last word, I KNOW it won't last, because I can't imagine Bruce Willis pulling out his Origami to flick a little catty message to Demi at the Oscars. It's no Blackberry.

Me too

I like the UMPC too!! See, I go to the bathroom to do the "#2 necessity" every day in the morning and I am addicted to reading something while I'm doing it.

Usually I read newspaper and magazines, and that is the only reason I still have those "paper things". If I have an Origami I can read my news from anywhere without having my eyes hurting because of the small fonts on devices such as PDAs or cell phones.

I think it's great!!

But they should put some DVR device on it. That would be so cool!! An Archos AV-500 like device.

I want one

I want one so while I'm out in the field taking photos, I can pull the images into Picasa and look at them right there and see if they are decent enough or if I need to take more. The little 1.5" LCD on my camera doesn't cut it.

They don't get it

Here's a very different "take" on Origami. Unlike the Buzz Crew, these guys don't have any doubt about its value. http://media.libsyn.com/media/motr/MoTR_32.mp3. Notice that they don't whine about it not having a cell phone. Not everyone is married their phone. My phone and Dell XPS Gen2 are always with me (see my CNET review of the Gen2), but guess which device I literally wear out using it almost 24/7.
