The issue is that the cobweb of patents and royalties due to all those other people push the price of such a device up to that of a small laptop. In fact, a small laptop does this now and will cost less than what you saw on Gizmodo.
The best unit I've seen that came close is an ipaq with wifi that could sync with home, run apps, play mp3 from the files at home and charged via the USB (and car too.) The 4GB requirement vanishes when we go wireless. Think about it.

I'm ready to buy my first mp3 player. Here's what I'm looking for:
Absolute requirements: At least 4GB, color screen and ability to download photographs directly from a camera, ease of use, good value for money, reasonable battery life, easy playlist/song sync through a PC application.
Ideally it should also feature: FM radio, voice recording, Outlook sync, relatively stylish exterior, relatively small form factor and weight (still, it doesn't need to be tiny), removable battery, ability to play many different music formats.
Two players I have considered are Creative Zen Vision (very nice but also very expensive) and MicroPhoto (but it's unclear whether it can directly download photos from a digicam; same goes for the iPod nano). There must be more out there that fit the bill.
Any thoughts or advice? TIA.
