I Just Want a Player

by MalachiConstant / November 16, 2005 4:32 AM PST

I'm trying to purchase an mp3 player with good sound quality that costs within the range of $200. I've had the Creative players in mind, particularly the Zen Micro or the Zen Sleek, but I'm very turned off by the idea of loading all of my music via WMP or Creative proprietary software, and I want to be able to transfer music between the player and both a Win desktop and a Mac laptop (and hook it up to my friend's Linux box if possible).

Can I get Creative players to work without installing a lot of crap? Will they work on Macs at all? If not, is there any player out there in my price range with good sound quality that will just show up as a drive?

And by "just show up as a drive" I mean

What would be ideal is a player with good sound quality that I can just plug in and it will register as a removable drive, like my flash drive or digital camera. Good navigation and some features would be nice, too, but not entirely necessary.

I'm not an Apple person, I'm a "what works best" person. And from what I've seen, the iPod is a little overhyped for the price. No denying it's a solid piece of equipment with a fairly intuitive interface, but about the only thing it has going for it at this point in my mind is the compatibility.

Priority Number One: Hard Drive in a Box

Is it just possible for somebody out there just to make a hard drive in a box that I can plug into my computer that has good sound quality? Is that even an option?

Okay, so you have to navigate. You have to recharge, you have to transfer, you have to listen. It's that simple. Work on making a quality product and don't bog it down with garbage and try to control what I'm able to do with what I own.

I swear, one of these days I'm going to lead a violent revolt of the estranged middle class against these electronics giants who infringe on customers because of copyright concerns. Microsoft will be the first to fall.

Any advice on a player for a revolutionary?

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
