That number...
Sep 24, 2015 6:00AM PDT

What is that number you keep quoting in your posts?

Personal info like a phone number? If so, why would you want to post your personal details in public forums like these, where anyone can read them?

I will never post my home address, phone number, email address, any other contact details in public forums. It is not recommended.

Re: OS
Sep 17, 2015 4:48AM PDT

- What OS was on that laptop originally? And why not reinstall that?
- Why did you have to or choose to install XP SP2? If it has to be XP, SP3 is a better choice, although you can still apply that upgrade later.
- Where did the installation CD come from?

Re: slow
Sep 17, 2015 2:48AM PDT

- Are you connected with the Internet via an Ethernet cable or wireless?
- Did you use an installation or recovery disk from Dell, or a retail version of XP?
- Did you install all drivers and such from www.dell.com or from the installation disk that came with the laptop?
- What exactly is slow after 5 minutes of what?
- What are the top 5 processes in Task manager (sorted in CPU usage descending, show processes for all users)?
- Can it be caused by Windows search starting to index the disk after a fresh install. Or your antivirus (which one?) doing a full scan?

Tell me about canned air use.
Sep 17, 2015 6:56AM PDT

My son brought back his 2006 Dell Inspron E1505 and it did slow down in minutes. So I started it on a daily canned air routine for a week and it's much better. It only has 1GB RAM so yours has twice that.

There's one other issue with fresh installs. Windows will be indexing the drive for some time so you can't expect top notch performance. Also that 80GB drive is well past its prime. To fix that issue I swapped in an 120GB SSD I found at Fry's for 39.99USD.

You may wonder why we did this. At the office we have some legacy clients that keep paying us for support so we keep a few XP machines in the collection.

A SSD for XP?
Sep 17, 2015 10:53AM PDT

I've always read to not do that because XP doesn't support "trim". You found a way around that?

Kees

We used it anyway.
Sep 17, 2015 11:02AM PDT

The unit needed a new HDD but for the same price we got a 120GB SSD. Since it's only used for support and not daily, we went "Eh?" and did it anyway. Works great and given the 10 days a year we may power it up, it will outlast us all.

Hope that explains it. Today's SSDs are much better than a few years ago. Early days were scary.

Longer explainer. Drives have garbage collection and more.
