General discussion

I installed my update disk from Asus on my Lenovo x61!

Long issue short. Is this a problem? It runs well but in system settings, it identifies the lenovo as an Asus Notebook. Should I buy another win 7 or is there no need?

Yes

Yes there is an issue with this. It is a violation of the license agreement for Windows, and you are using a pirated copy of Windows right now. Whether or not it is reported as such doesn't matter.

If you want to be on the legal up and up, and continue to be able to get support here, you will need to get a new copy of Windows for the Lenovo system.

I will buy a new copy of windows 7. On computing side however, will this present an operating problem for the lenovo?

PROBABLY Not

PROBABLY not, but you never quite know what customizations may have been made by the OEM. So there could be some surprise just waiting to attack at some unknown point in the future.

But the main thing here is that as far as Microsoft is concerned, it's not enough to simply buy another copy of Windows. You have to be using that specific install key/code, and that's where you're likely to run into problems. The copy you installed is likely a volume license version, and so even if you tried using some sort of key switching program, it likely wouldn't work with the key from your soon to be purchased copy.

So, in order to pass muster as far as Microsoft is concerned, you'll need to revert back to whatever you had installed before, and then upgrade again to Win7 using the new copy.

EULA

The upgrade media is intended for the machine that qualified for the free upgrade. I recommend reading the EULA.

I am quite surprized the installation was even allowed

The disk should have been created to know by the MB that it wasn't from ASUS. Other ASUS bundled software has done that in the past and would not allow installation on a non ASUS system. I expect they might want to fix that.
