I have the same problem

Sep 24, 2004 3:20PM PDT

I tried the "normal.dot" thru search but there's no file with such name. I really bugs me too. I just copy and paste a webpage and after that, my word program always starts with that document. I did uninstall and install my Microsoft Office Word, but still it gives me the same problem. I also used System restore but still, that particular documents comes out. It acts like a virus. I hope somebody out there can share something.

If you have MS Word, you really have a file called normal.dot, somewhere on your hard disk.

The normal.dot is the basis for a new document (unless you specify another one, like fax.dot or cv.dot). Everything that's in it (text and settings) appears in a new document. If you accidentally save a document as normal.dot, those text and settings will be used in all new documents. No virus, no spyware, no magic, no registry involved, just a plain old nice Word feature. And uninstall doesn't remove normal.dot, because install doesn't install it (it's created the first time you run Word).

The location varies with versions of MS Word and OS and if you are using profiles/accounts, but it's easy to find out with Tools>Options>File Locations or a search using Explorer.

Keep searching. If you really can't find it, you can try the Office Removal Wizard, to be found in the Office CD ROM. But I trust it won't be necessary.
