That all depends.

What OS are you using, Windows or Mac?
What format is the video?
What OS is your friend using?

If Windows, then just send the person the file. If you can play it on your computer, then they should be able to do the same.

If Mac, then just send the person the file. The Mac can play a whole bunch of video formats, especially with the addition of a piece of software called Flip For Mac.

Your video file may not need converting at all.

Regardless of what operating system you have, you say your friend has Windows XP. So, convert the video to .WMV format (Windows Media Video). That way your friend can play it in Windows Media Player. Or, if they feel adventuress, they can download VLC Media Player v2.1.0. It will run on XP, and can play just about anything you can throw at it. I hope this helps.
