You got what Sonly promised on http://www.sony.net/Products/memorycard/en_as/hdd/software/index.html : more fun.
I assume the data on that disk is encrypted, but it's not really clear from that page and another Sony page is unavailable at the moment. Anyway, you can check it by booting from some Linux disk or stick and having a look at that external hard disk. If not encrypted: copy your files out and format that disk.
If it's encrypted, as I fear, you can try to install the software on another PC and see if you can access your data then. If that works, copy it out and format that the disk.
If you can't access the files either on Linux or on another PC, ask Sony customer service about what to do. It's their software and if anybody knows, it's them.
The easiest way, of course, is to just copy those files from your unencrypted backup. After all, you only lose what you didn't backup. It's well-known that external hard disks are unreliable and not suited for storage, just for backup (but not your ONLY backup) and moving data between different PC's.
