Resolved Question

I have a mess

Nov 4, 2011 2:40AM PDT

Yesterday, on my DH's computer (Dell XP pro 3), AVG free found "trojan horse generic 25.BFYF" in dll files. It would say it was removed, but if you run it again, it says it's still there. I worked on it again this morning and after running AVG several times, got a clean scan. Some dll files appear to be missing.

Then, a few minutes ago, something called "windows privacy" says it's detected a trojan horse w32.blaster.worm and to activate protection, press here. I have no idea what "Windows privacy" is, so I did a hard restart to get this mess to stop. It's detecting all this stuff called child porn, etc. which made me suspicious of this "windows privacy" thing. The "windows privacy" icon is still there in the tray and on the desktop.

He really has nothing on the computer, so a system restore would be an option but can't find instructions in the help file. I've searched for the trojan horse generic 25.BFYF, but couldn't find anything on AVG's site.

Any ideas?

I think I would have used the guide from Bleeping Computer on this one.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-windows-privacy-agent

Most of this stuff is due to us installing it (sometimes we click ok!) or cruising an infected site. I find using some other browser on my fully updated Windows with Web Of Trust installed to really help but in the end it's up to us to avoid such sites and not use Internet Explorer all the time. (they target that one.)

Hope you cure it.

It appears to be cured.

The shop put McAfee on it and did a full system restore, so I assume it's cured.

I was wrong, it was up to date on microsoft updates - at least it was set for automatic updates.

Somehow, when I have a problem like this, I wonder about virus protection.

Thanks for answering all my questions, which you do well. Thanks again.

Answer
Just took it to the shop

This mess kept escalating. I looked up the "windows privacy" thing, and it's supposed to be malware. I coudln't get it it to stop "running scans". His computer wouldn't load Explorer or AVG, so he just took it to the shop.

What should I have done? (Microsoft updates were not current, but AVG was.)
