I HAVE A 5 1/2 YEAR OLD GATEWAY DESKTOP STILL RUNNING XP....

Sep 12, 2008 12:11PM PDT

(XPSP3.) It isn't very potent, with 256RAM and 60GB hard-drive. It is running just fine with the XP updates. I don't know if I should get a new CPU that handles VISTA. I don't game or record movies.

Should I hold on to it till it is completely obsolete??? MS says it will support XP until 2014.

If anyone recommeds a new system, what would you all suggest?

APPLE or VISTA? Only plan on purchasing one new system in my lifetime.

Looking for any and all input on this issue, or is this a NON-ISSUE
as long as the GATEWAY doesn't crap out. I did purchase life-time tech
support when I bought the machine (no longer available.)

Thank you all in advance.

Sincerely,

Riverledge.

If it isn't broke don't fix, comes to mind. If you're happy with your system now, basically allow it to age gracefully. If it does everything you need it to do, the value of a new system may not be all that important.

The upgrade path, is to get whatever it can be able to allow. Maybe more memory, a better video card and they needn't be new, used does fine provide they work. Even the cpu could be swapped out, again if the system supports it. That's the key, what does your old system support, you need to review the specs and/or manual to see what can be had. The cost will be less than new. However, if the cost is placed into a new system, then you need to decide. However, 5 1/2 yrs. is along time for a PC system and it has been eclipsed.

Look online via their websites the offering Gateway, Dell, HP, etc. offer either in brand new system or refurbed ones. -OR- visit a local Best Buy, Fry's Circuit City, even Wal-Mart for offering an hands approach, they too offer online viewing. check it all out. You might want to check laptops as well, if that interests you. ther is also "custom builds" or the DIY approach. read the forums here and get a feel.

I HAVE A 5 1/2 YEAR OLD GATEWAY DESKTOP STILL RUNNING XP.

I have a 9 yr old no-name desktop still running w98.
It does everything I need it to do.
It does it quite speedily I might add.
As long as it does what I need I see no reason to go looking for trouble.

If your machine does what you need....enjoy.
You might enjoy a bit more if you were to 2x/4x/8x that ram.
I suspect that small ram size is acting like an anchor...not to mention your driving your HD crazy...swapping.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INPUT..........

I CALLED GATEWAY TECH, NOW RUN BY MPC (who ever they are.....) They

informed me that maximum amount of RAM my the motherboard can handle is

1,024 MB. That's 4X of what I have now. I'm a huge fan of XP, and

really don't want to adjust to VISTA anyway. Rather wait until

MICROSOFT gets it right. BEST BUY has informed me the difference between 256MB and 1,024MB will really speed things up.

What do you all think???

Sounds like a relatively cheap fix for now!

All opinions welcomed...........

Thanks,

Ram limits
Sep 13, 2008 1:35PM PDT

1gb of ram for XP is a solid ram amount. It is very practical to have that amount and since that's the max. amount that's it.

Look here for a source and knowledge base: http://www.crucial.com

I didn't check on your system specs, that you may have to sacrifice your current ram or build on it. This strongly depends on the ram slots available to get to the 1gb amount. The wbsite, I provided should those offer specs and options.

MY GATEWAY ONLY HAS TWO (2) RAM SLOTS; FOR A MAX 1,024 RAM
Sep 16, 2008 1:40PM PDT

........UPDATING THE RAM TO 1024(2-512MB CHIPS) IS THE OBVIOUS WAY TO MAKE THE BEST

IMPROVEMENT DOLLAR-WISE. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MEMORY ON THE EXISTING

256MB RAM CHIP???

I'M Planning on having BEST BUY'S "GEEK SQUAD" install it, as I don't

have the correct wherewithall to try it myself.

WHAT INFORMATION WILL I LOSE BY YANKING THE 256MB MODULE OUT???

PLEASE HELP.

Sincerely,

Riverledge.

well...

hello, if you take out the RAM, Absolutely nothing happens, except you have to replace it, preferably with more Wink... when XP stops, if you REALLY want an updating OS, you might just want to try out linux... now, i know ehat you,re thinking...

"but linux is a server OS... But linux is sooo hard to use... But i *NEED* windows" i'm fairly sure you said one of those...

The thing is that 6 months ago when i got fed up with windows, i shrunk the partition to like 20 gb on my HD and put on Ubuntu linux. You, on the other hand, would need to use Xubuntu... it uses a lighter Desktop Environment... if you arent bought yet, then let me tell you that Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu all get updated almost daily and unless you are gaming, the change will be relatively painless... you might want to join a few forums related to Xubuntu...

PLEASE DO NOT GO TO A MACINTOSH... Linux can do everything a mac can do ,and in many cases, it can do it betterWink

Thanks, and Good Luck
