Question

I have a 1997 jeep cheeke 4l.

Just bought it, it heats up to 100 and stalls, won't start for half hour it stops why I'm in traffic. A real head deck, can you help me out on how to fix this problem please. I've taking out thermo, flushed it out. Still up the creek. Lol. I need help. Cheer's

Closed "choke" or restricted airflow

Yours dies after it warms up, so most likely problem is a choke plate over the air intake (manifold) that isn't opening up fully when the engine has warmed up, creating too rich an gasoline to air mixture, flooding it out. Has your MPG suffered a lot lately too?

Hi, Damien; Besides the other suggestions, a coolant temp sensor could also be a 'guess'. Is the Check Engine light coming on? If so, you can have any codes read at most parts stores for free.
Back to the CTS; The CTS tells the computer what temperature the engine is at. When the engine is cold, the computer demands more fuel. As the engine warms, it starts leaning out the air/fuel mixture. If the CTS fails, and tells the computer "Hey, I'm cold" when it really isn't it will cause an over-fueling issue and flood the engine. All that extra fuel will take a while to evaporate so you can restart. Never remove the thermostat. The engine has to run around 192F to be efficient. Keep in mind that your vehicle has two temp sensors. One for the computer air/fuel mix, and the other for the temp gauge. The one for the gauge will have no effect on the engine.
