General discussion

I hate network stuff !!!

May 1, 2014 4:14AM PDT

help please

new build win 8.1

I am trying to configure an HP printer driver to digitally scan to a specific folder on a hard drive

it says "the device needs to authenticate itself on the network before it can save to a network folder"
then asks for my user name and password

(not the wireless router name and password)

direct Ethernet connection from main computer to router

I have tried many variations without success

how do I figure out my network computer and user name:

in net speak ?

e.g. \\?????\???\username ??

the Microsoft account adds a whole new level of complexity and woe

is my user password my pin number
or is it my MS account password
or something else

is my user name "Robert" as listed in windows\users folder
or is it some variation of in "netspeak"

thanks for any help
my new build screams but I am undergoing the usual trials of a new clean install (Win 8.1)

My bet is that HP can't do that.

The network shares changed in Windows 7 and 8 to homegroups and disallow shares and writing to any directory I want. This can cheese off owners that were used to network shares in older windows.

HP should answer these questions but let's tackle a few.

1. is my user name "Robert" as listed in windows\users folder
or is it some variation of in "netspeak"

No. The user name and the folder name does not have to match. You could check the user accounts for the names or learn the NET command. I think it is NET USERS to list them.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/149781 documents how.

2. I am trying to configure an HP printer driver to digitally scan to a specific folder on a hard drive

I wish this was easier to share but due to prior exploits, Microsoft has restricted what folders we can access or write over a network. Go with what works.

3. There's more to this than meets the eyes. That is, I couldn't scan over wifi for the next reason at link.

It can wipe out a new to network person since the LAN connection worked!

Did you set it up for whatever security (WEP or WPA) and key code your router uses?

got things working - yay

here is what I did:

1. disconnected from Microsoft user account and changed to a local user account with a simple name and password on Desktop and Laptop

2. went here: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

HomeGroup connections

checked Allow Windows to control homegroup connections

all machines talking and playing nice together

thanks
