Question

I forgot my PrivateFolder master password. How do I reset it

Feb 14, 2015 2:28PM PST

I am using eMing software's "Private Folder" to lock some files on my computer(Windows 7). I changed the master password a few weeks back, but have forgotten it now. How do I unlock my files now? Is there a way of resetting the password? I can't even uninstall the software without entering the master password. Please help!!!

It is not looking good.

Their web site at http://www.emingsoftware.com/products/private-folder/ does not appear to offer any Help or FAQ options.

They have a "Leave Comment or Report Bug." option which doesn't look to hopeful. Forgetting a master password is not a bug.

Or they have a Tweet option. May be you can seek their advice through Tweet.

Other than that, use your backups or remember that new master password.

Can I ask why you did this?

"Users have had the ability to password protect or encrypt files on Windows machines for years. Applications such as WinZip and Microsoft's own file and folder encryption function for Windows XP. (See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/learnmore/encryptdata.mspx) I'm not sure why Private Folder created such a stir -- maybe because it was so easy to use and because the pundits did not have much else to talk about that week."

At least you knew from the millions of posts about lost files to have a backup plan.
