Then you need to install the drivers in this order. You should have a drivers disk that came with the computer.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

Download the drivers

from the manufacturers website. Do it on the computer that works and put the files on a flash drive or disk.

For Windows you have to hunt down the drivers or some items don't work. It's important to ask the seller for help or refund your money if they won't help.

I re-read your posts. You had XP pro and you Dad had XP Media Center. You installed XP Media Center. Because you installed the wrong system, you'll never be able to validate that version of Windows. You gonna have to install the version that came with the computer and enter the proper product key. The computer will disable your ability to do things, with a different version.

Good luck,

Rick

You might have to purchase a real version of Windows.

Which do you have.

As to solving this issue, that's simple. Go back to what worked. Your XP Pro is just as capable as Media Center.

What I do....

Is to disable the onboard ethernet and use a card when that happens. We have finite time to spend on such things and must move forward to the other projects at the office. Any IT staffer that spends a day trying to make an ethernet port work rather than take the quick exit usually doesn't last long.
