I don't know what I need to buy.

I am looking into buying netbooks (?) for my kids. I have no idea which ones are a good buy. I do not want to spend a fortune on them.
I would say that they will be surfing the net and emailing maybe playing games on the nickeloden website, facebooking ect. Also would they be able to type up a paper for school and print it out?
I am not up on all the lingo with computers and what everything means so please could someone explain this to me in a way I can understand.
I have a laptop and they keep fighting over it so they can use it so I thought with the holidays comming it might make a good gift.
